ESOL Principle 3: Maintain the same learning outcome for all learners

This activity can involve every student, at whatever English level they are (differentiated), with the less skilled ELLs given a hard copy of a simplified list.

Universal Bingo is just like the Bingo game, but you can use it for any set of information from any subject. See instructions doc for LI and SC etc.

I’ve used Y10 Science terms, but you could use it for any sets of vocabulary and definitions/translations (with or without pictures). Students just need a piece of paper and a pen. They draw up their own grids and the teacher projects the list onto the screen, with the same number of (or more) items/rows as the grid – you can choose how many, and what items you want the students to know.

As the teacher reads out a word/definition/translation of a word, the student crosses off the related number (see Science example) and the first student to cover a strip of numbers (which you determine) calls out BINGO. The teacher checks the list of numbers they called out and decides if the student has been honest!!

There are many variations/adaptations to make it harder) covering up certain vocab/pictures/definitions – see instructions for more, or easier (simplified hard copy/less options).
