Structured Literacy

Structured literacy is a research-based approach to reading instruction that emphasizes explicit, systematic teaching of foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. This method is particularly beneficial for young learners, as it provides clear, sequenced instruction that builds upon prior knowledge, ensuring that students develop strong literacy foundations. By focusing on the science of reading, structured literacy supports all students, including those with learning differences, in becoming proficient readers and writers. Implementing structured literacy in primary classrooms across New Zealand aims to enhance educational outcomes and promote equity in literacy achievement.
