Supporting Bilingual and Multilingual Learners

Have you ever wondered what our ELL students find frustrating or struggle with? This presentation will help you with tools and strategies for your ELL learners and other learners in your classes too.

Teachers speaking too fast, or instructing with their back to the class while writing on the board, or using a lot of subject-specific language without support.

  • Feeling different – not having a place to belonging.
  • Parental expectations.
  • Loneliness – feeling a sense of isolation.
  • Ambiguity – what does success mean and look like? SMART goals
  • Shame, failure
  • Cultural differences – deeply ingrained beliefs, social constructs etc. that can be misunderstood in the new culture
  • Note-taking during lessons – need time to process and understand
  • Timed tests – same reason – need time to process and understand
